Weekend Preview
The Cougars and the Bulldogs will go toe-to-toe on the opening weekend of the 2017 NCAA I Baseball season, with each sporting high hopes for the upcoming campaign. Both teams feature young, relatively unproven pitching staffs as well as lineups chock full of game-altering potential. First pitch on Friday is slated for 5:02 pm on SEC+. Saturday's game is scheduled for 1:02 pm on SEC+; Sunday's first pitch is slated for 1:02 pm.
CAA Preseason Projections
Coming off a disappointing end to the 2016 season, the Cougars are tabbed to finish third in the race for the 2017 CAA regular season title. With a bevy of returning talent and a promising group of newcomers, CofC has the pieces in place to make an impassioned run at its sixth conference championship.
Preseason Hardware
A trio of Cougars earned preseason recognition from the CAA this spring, with
Dupree Hart and
Bailey Ober each earning a spot on the Preseason All-CAA Team and
Erven Roper garnering a Honorable Mention nod.
Scouting Georgia
Georgia enters its fourth season under the direction of head coach Scott Stricklin looking to make the leap into the top half of the SEC. The Bulldogs posted a 27-30 overall record and an 11-19 mark in league play before bowing out in the opening round of the SEC Tournament last season.
Sophomore Kevin Smith and junior Chase Atkins are expected to provide the backbone of the weekend rotation, with promising freshman Tony Locey in line for a weekend slot as well. LJ Talley and Keegan McGovern headline a young lineup for the Bulldogs looking to flex its muscles in the SEC this season.
Model of Consistency
Sophomore
Bradley Dixon was the model of consistency at the dish for the Cougars last season, failing to reach base in only seven of his 51 appearances and finishing the year with a .273 batting average. The Greenwood, S.C. native ended the season on a 17-game streak of reaching base safely, which he will carry over into the 2017 campaign.
