Three Cougars Score on Opening Day of Seahawk Invitational

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The College of Charleston track & field program got off to a hot start through the first day of the Seahawk Invitational Friday, as three athletes made dents on the CofC Top 10 performance lists.
The Cougars saved their best performance for the last event to wrap up of the day, doing so in the javelin throw. Jenny Martin improved her standing as the second-best javelin thrower in CofC history, breaking her personal best by 73cm with a heave of 40.62m. Martin finished second among a field of 31 competitors, along with Nicole Lane (35.26m) who finished ninth.
Marissa Small-Towns finished seventh in the 800m run with a time of 2:21.75, while Julisa Tindall finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 5.28m to round out the scoring for the Cougars. CofC tallied 10 team points on the day.
Elsewhere in the hammer throw, Courtney Brooks finished first among the Cougars with a hoist of 42.80m to finish tied for 10th. Just behind her, freshman Asia Johnson debuted on the Top 10 list at No. 6 with a 13th-place effort of 40.64m. Fellow freshman Leona Burton also etched her name onto a Top 10 performance list when she finished 17th in the 100m dash with a time of 12.71.
Kallie Golicher rounded things out, crossing the 5000m finish line with a time of 21:17.40 to capture 20th.
Things come to a head on Saturday in the final day of competition. Field events begin at 9 a.m. with the shot put and triple jump, while track events will kick off at noon with the 4x100m relay.
