CHARLESTON, S.C. – For the seventh-consecutive year, the College of Charleston men's golf program will be represented at the U.S. Amateur Championship as former All-American and recent alum
William Rainey ('17) qualified for the second time of his career.
Â
Rainey shot 3-under par to finish runner-up at a qualifying tournament held at the Country Club at Woodmore on July 17-18 in Bowie, Md. The 2017 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golfer of the Year previously qualified for the U.S. Am held at Olympia Fields in 2015.
Â
This year's event will be held on Aug. 14-20 and co-hosted by The Riviera Country Club and Bel-Air Country Club located in Pacific Palisades and Los Angeles, Calif.
Â
"I am excited that our program will be represented at the U.S. Amateur for the seventh year in a row," CofC Head Coach
Mark McEntire said. "Congrats to
William Rainey. What a way to finish out his career as a Cougar. William has been a great ambassador for our program over the past four years and we could not have a better representative. We hope that he gets to match play and uses this event as a springboard to his professional career."
Â
Rainey, who earned his bachelor's degree in sociology in May, closed out his four-year career with his second nod on both the All-CAA First Team and Division I PING All-Region Team. During his senior campaign, he led the Cougars to their fourth-straight CAA title and NCAA Regional berth.
Â
In 2016, Rainey was a Division I PING All-America honorable mention selection and became the program's first-ever NCAA Division I Men's Golf Individual Finalist. He ranks second all-time in single-season scoring average (71.58 in 2016-17) and tied for first all-time in single-season tournament wins (2 in 2015-16) in program history.
