Cougar Comeback Bid Falls Short as Va. Tech Escapes 71-61
11/22/2016 9:31:00 PM | Women's Basketball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – A huge comeback effort from the College of Charleston women's basketball team (1-3) fell just short Tuesday night, and Virginia Tech (5-0) escaped with the 71-61 win.
• The Hokies pushed the lead to as high as 16 in the second quarter, but the Cougars inched their way back into the game slowly but surely. It came to a crescendo when the Cougars scored seven straight to start the fourth, capped off by a Darien Huff three to make the game 53-52 and force Virginia Tech into a timeout. The Hokies would make the needed adjustments and score seven unanswered to preserve the lead and the win.
• The Cougars led most of the statistical categories, outshooting the Hokies by way of 46.2% shooting (24 of 52) to Virginia Tech's 39.7% (25 of 63) and outrebounding them 39-36. Turnovers were the bane for the Cougars, as CofC committed 18 on the night.
• Breanna Bolden logged her second consecutive double-double with a 16-10-3 performance with three steals, while Tanisha Brown led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points and seven boards. Huff and Dajah Logan had 12 points each as well.
• Chanette Hicks was the standout player for the Hokies, posting 22 points and six steals. The Cougars managed to stem her production to an extent by forcing her into foul problems.
"Turnovers has been our Achilles' Heel so far through these first four games," head coach Candice M. Jackson said. "We have to do a better job at taking care of the ball, and we need to get out faster in first quarters. But I think the comeback was very big for us, and I'm proud of the team for bringing energy and finishing their opportunities."
The Cougars resume their season with a Sunday showdown on the road against Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.
