Women’s Tennis Dominates Day One of CofC Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women's tennis team submitted a nearly perfect outing in the opening day of the CofC Classic Friday, with the Cougars taking all seven singles matchups and two of their three doubles contests.
 
In doubles play, CofC kicked things off against the Winthrop Eagles. Liza Fieldsend and Rachel McNeely teamed up for the first time since February to carry their second flight matchup with Alisa Solovena and Alya Mourad, 6-2. Anastasia Palaska and Helena Nyikos gave the Cougars the edge in the third flight, sweeping past Nida Kamal and Aida Kelic 6-0.
 
The Cougars met the Samford Bulldogs in singles, winning all six of their flights in two sets. Christi Woodson had the most dominant performance for the College, knocking off Ellie Gerlach 6-1, 6-2 in the second flight. Nyikos (6-3, 6-1), Palaska (6-0, 6-4) and Sarah Zschunke (6-2, 6-2) all surrendered a scant four sets on their paths to victory. Mara Argyriou vanquished Elsa Pool in the fourth flight 6-3, 6-2, while Fieldsend won her top flight skirmish with Savannah Wood 6-4, 6-4. The most competitive affair took place in the sixth flight, where McNeely eventually earned the 6-3, 7-5 win over Georgina Jupp.
 
The Cougars resume play Saturday, when the Cougars will draw Samford in doubles play at 10 a.m. and Marshall in doubles at 1 p.m.
