Cougars Comeback to Tame Tigers 59-54

CHARLESTON,S.C. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (8-14, 5-6) completed the 2-0 weekend in TD Arena Sunday, coming back to defeat the Towson Tigers (11-11, 4-7) 59-54.

• Both teams were plagued by poor shooting and turnovers during the first half. The Cougars pawed away 10 steals in the opening 20 minutes alone, forcing the Tigers into 16 first half turnovers. With the ball not falling on either end of the floor, Towson went into the locker room up 23-20.

• Towson and the Cougars traded the lead a few times in the third before Towson ripped off a 14-3 run late in the period and early in the fourth. Though they pushed the lead to 12 with 6:30 to play, a Shiclasia Brown And-1 sparked the CofC comeback. Brown struck again with 2:10 remaining to tie it from the free throw line, and fellow point guard Nola Henry put the Cougars up for good with a free throw followed by a huge layup with 41 seconds to play to cement the lead.

• Down three, the Tigers had a shot to tie the game, but Raven Bankston missed the contested three. Breanna Bolden got the rebound, was fouled, and converted both free throws to end the game.

• Bolden led all scorers with 20 points on 5 of 12 shooting from the field and 8 of 8 shooting from the stripe. Not only did she pass Connie Culbreth (1978-82) to move to 7th on the CofC all-time scoring list, but she registered at least 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals for the 11th straight game.

Brianna Boyd came off the bench to submit a huge 17-13 double-double, setting a new career-high in rebounds. Boyd played 31 minutes, and also tallied two steals and a block.

• The Cougars forced Towson into 28 turnovers, and won the day by drawing 27 fouls on the Tigers. In contrast, the Cougars only committed 10 fouls.  CofC also edged Towson in the rebounding battle 40-37. Raven Bankston had a solid game in defeat, scoring 17 points to go with four assists and four steals.

"It was kind of touch and go there at the beginning," head coach Candice M. Jackson said. "I definitely hand it to the team for picking up the intensity in the fourth quarter when it mattered most. Our ability to raise our game and pressure the ball more really helped push us through."

The Cougars will hit the road for the next three games, beginning with a Friday night showdown in Hempstead, N.Y. with Hofstra.
