Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars Edged by Third Quarter Run at Hofstra

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The College of Charleston women's basketball team (5-12, 1-5) hung with Hofstra for 35 minutes on Sunday in the David S. Mack Sports Complex, but the Pride took advantage of a five-minute Cougar lapse at the end of the third quarter that enabled them to secure the 65-60 decision.

• The Cougars came out the gate with a unified offensive approach, as six different players scored the first six CofC baskets of the game. The College and the Pride were separated by just one point at the end of each of the opening quarters, with the score 29-28 CofC at the half.

•  CofC's difficulties came in the bottom half of the third. The College led it 39-37 with 4:35 remaining in the period, but the Pride kicked off a 17-4 run for the remainder of the period, securing a lead that they would not relinquish. The Cougars would spend the fourth quarter clawing their way back, pulling as close as within three in the final minutes of the game, but Hofstra was able to preserve the lead by forcing CofC into fouling and capitalizing on their free-throw attempts.

Tanisha Brown recorded her 17th career double-double with a 10-10 performance, but was limited by late foul trouble. Deja Ford meanwhile scored a game-high 19 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Bri Sullivan had yet-another career effort with three steals, and New York-native Shiclasia Brown rounded things out with a well-rounded 13-3-5, adding four steals in front of her friends and family.

• `The Cougars won the rebounding battle 35-31 and demonstrated superior ball security by forcing 26 Hofstra turnovers, but the Pride won the day with their 53.2% shooting from the field on 25 of 47 shooting, which included 5 of 9 from deep.

• Hofstra's Olivia Askin was once again potent from long-range against the Cougars, going a perfect 5 of 5 from deep for 15 points after going 6 of 6 in the previous meeting. Ashunae Durant was also effective with a 13-13 double-double.

The Cougars return home next weekend, and will face James Madison on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in TD Arena.
