CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's basketball team (6-18, 2-11) pushed out to a big lead against UNCW (8-15, 1-11) on Friday night, and were able to hold on for the 72-63 win despite the late Seahawk comeback.
• The Cougars were blazing hot from the three-point line with a 10 of 17 performance from deep. At 58.8% shooting, it was tied for the fifth-most accurate three-point shooting performance from the College in the school's NCAA Division I Era history.
•
Cailin Dorsey and
Darien Huff championed the three-point cause, combining for eight of the Cougars' ten threes. Huff finished with 16 points, while Dorsey achieved a career-best 18 points. Dorsey in particular was instrumental in setting the tone for the Cougars, hitting a long-range shot on the first shot of each half. UNCW actually converted more threes with 11, but did so on an astounding 37 attempts.
• CofC won the first and third quarters by a combined 15 points, and drew even in the second. UNCW put together a late 9-0 run in the fourth quarter to reduce the deficit to six, but CofC was able to fend them off with timely free throw shooting at the end. Free throw shooting was actually a rare sight, as the referees called just one foul in the entire first half.
•
Tanisha Brown was just a touch shy of registering her first career triple-double. Nonetheless, the senior forward registered a 15-15 double-double while recording career highs in both assists and blocks with nine and three respectively.
•
Shiclasia Brown finished with seven boards and five assists, raising her career assist total to 306. In doing so, she surpassed Sarah Weaver (1997-01) and Shanna Mickens (2000-04) to move up to No. 5 in career dimes for the CofC NCAA Division I Era.
• With the win, the Cougars vault past the Seahawks into ninth place in the CAA standings. They remain two games back of both Hofstra and Towson.
The College of Charleston resumes their road trip this weekend, when they travel to play Elon.
