A Dustin Scott (Jamestown, S.C.) double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) paced the College of Charleston men's basketball team to a 94-72 win over South Carolina State on Monday evening in a game played at the Smith-Hamilton-Middleton Center on the campus of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C.
In the first half, the Cougars raced out to a 28-7 lead in the game's first 11 minutes. The rally was paced both by a Cougar offensive unit that shot 71 percent from the floor, while the Charleston defense forced six turnovers and held South Carolina State to just 27 percent shooting from the floor.
From there, the Bulldogs made a rally of their own, as they outscored the Cougars 26-14 over the final 10 minutes of the first period. With that, the score stood at 42-31 in favor of the Cougars at intermission, as Tony White Jr. (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Cougars with 11 points on 5-6 shooting from the field.
In the second half, the Cougars built on their lead early in the period, only to see South Carolina State claw their way back into the game, as the Bulldogs cut the Charleston lead to 75-69 with a little over five minutes left in the contest.
It was from there that the Cougars controlled the rest of the contest, outscoring South Carolina State 19-3 over the final five minutes to take the victory.
For the game, the Cougars had six players register double-figure scoring nights. Along with Scott's 17, Andrew Goudelock (Lilburn, Ga.) also had 17 on 6-12 shooting from the floor. Antwaine Wiggins (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Donovan Monroe (Waxhaw, N.C.) each chipped in 13 points each, while Jeremy Simmons (Lithonia, Ga.) added 11. Marcus Hammond (Memphis, Tenn.) rounded out the Cougar double-figure scorers with 10 on the night.
Also, the Cougars have now recorded back-to-back games in which they have cracked the 90-point barrier for the first time since the 2005-06 season. The Cougars also registered their first win at South Carolina State since 1982.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, November 28th when they host South Carolina at the Carolina First Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
