The College of Charleston sailing team leaves today for the college national championships in Newport, R.I.
The Cougars are one of only eight programs nationwide to qualify for all three spring national events: women's, team racing and coed dinghies. The women are ranked first nationally, and the coed team is ranked sixth.
"The women have been sailing great all semester. They face some tough competition at nationals, but have a shot at the title," coach Alice Manard said.
The C of C women are led by Newport native Dani Neri, a senior and 2007 All-American crew who will sail B division with honorable mention women's All-American Shannon Heausler. Sailing A division will be women's All-American Allie Blecher and sophomore Christina Murray, a top crew performer.
The coed team is led by senior skipper Chris Lash and All-American crew Megan Riddle. "They have been improving throughout the year and are going into nationals with great chemistry and confidence," Manard said.
C of C sailing has won more national titles than any college team in the Carolinas in any sport.
