Head Coach Bobby Cremins
About the victory
“Basically I told our team that we needed to get off to a good start. We get behind with Samford and it could be a long night. We got off to a great start and it was wonderful. They even scored and had two points taken away from them [referring to a review of a Samford shot clock violation]. “At half-time, I thought we were in a good position but I told our guys that Samford wasn't going to quit”.
About Samford
“I've gotten to know Samford in the last couple of years and geographically it's a little tough for us. As far as an academic institution, beautiful school, class act, class coach, class kids. Samford is great for our league”.
On the play of the Bulldogs
“It's great to see Coach Tillette out there. His team never quit. I had some flashbacks to Chattanooga on Thursday night, up 25 and then it's a ten point game. I didn't want that to happen, not against Samford because if they get the momentum they can shoot threes.
Speaking about the play of Andrew Goudelock
“Andrew Goudelock was amazing in the second half. In the first half they kind of gave him the long range shot and challenged him to drive. He got a little bit confused but to his credit, he adjusted. All I told him at half-time was that you have to take what they give you. What they did was to back off of him and take him out of the lane. It worked except that Tony White, Jr. was making some shots”.
“In the second half, Drew took exactly what the defense gave him. He didn't hesitate, he didn't dribble, he just caught, squared and shot. I was really proud of him. He's a great shooter and I'm glad I don't have to figure out how to defend him”.
On the team's performance
“We're doing well. We all know what our weaknesses are. Rebounding, strength, physicality. That's why we need Jeremy [Simmons] in there. We got [Matt] Sundberg playing time so were still messing around with our rotations”.
Previewing Monday's match-up with The Citadel
“The Citadel is completely different. They're as good as anybody in the league now. Ed Conroy's turned the program completely around. He recruited a great player. We all get lucky in recruiting and he found a gem when he found Cameron Wells. I wish he didn't find him but he's a gem. Urbanus is a great shooter”.
“They picked us apart last year, beat us twice. We had a great game over there. It was a great win for us after we beat North Carolina to go over there and beat them in a great game. It's not the Princeton offense, but we're going to see a lot of 8-to-10 passes. We're going to see Cameron Wells posting up, driving. He really hurt us at their place with post up moves”.
“It's not only a conference rival, its an inner city rival. It's a big game. We're playing well. We'll see what happens”.
Andrew Goudelock
Speaking about the second half performance
“Shooting threes is tricky. You can never tell if you're going to make shots or not. Coach told me to just keep my head in the game and I listened to him and shots started falling”.
On how today's game affects the upcoming game vs. The Citadel
“I think it gives us a lot of momentum going into our next game because The Citadel runs the Princeton offense and were used to that now. It's tough to guard so we have to get our rest heading into that game. I think it's a confidence boost for our defense as we held Samford to our season low 54 points”.
Previewing the game with The Citadel and a match-up with Cameron Wells
“Cameron Wells is a great player but it's not an individual match-up between us. He's one of the best players I've played against and one of the best in this conference, so of course I'm looking forward to it. Everybody's always looking forward to a challenge but it's a team game”.
Tony White, Jr.
About his performance
“I just remembered back when we played at Samford earlier and I didn't play my best. They kind of frustrated me and my teammates and that was kind of in the back of my head coming into today.”
Speaking about how today's performance impacts the game vs. The Citadel
“I feel that it's very important because Samford and The Citadel are very similar. They run the offense and play the same type of basketball. We are going to have to play 30-second possessions”.
Previewing the game with The Citadel
“I'm just thinking about last year when they came onto our home court and got a victory. It wasn't fun. They really owned Charleston last year. It's a rivalry so you can through the records out the door. It's all about on the court and we'll be ready for it.”
