Cougar Sailors Finish Second, Advance to ICSA Nationals

The College of Charleston sailing team won four and finished second in two others in the final 10 races to move from third after the first day to second at the conclusion of the ICSA National Championship East Semifinals held May 1-2 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Boston College won the event, winning 11 races to secure 114 points, 35 ahead of the second-place Cougars.
In 30 races the Cougars won six and placed in the top five in 12 of them to finish with 149 points, eight ahead of third-place Georgetown. The Cougars, along with Boston College, Georgetown, Vermont, Tufts, Brown Navy, South Florida and Kings Point, qualified for the ICSA National Championship to be held June 1-3 in Madison, Wisc.
Juan Maegli (Guatemala), Katie Weaver (Davidsonville, Md.) and Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.) led the Cougars in the A-Division and finished third with 79 points, just 10 behind Georgetown, which finished second. Jackson Benvenutti (Bay St. Louis, Miss.), Christina Murray (Annapolis, Md.) and Sam Stokes (Norfolk, Va.) sailed in the B-Division for Charleston and took second with 70 points.
The Cougars will compete in all three ICSA National Championships this spring with the Women's May 25-28th, the Team Race May 29-31 and the Coed June 1-3. All three regattas will be held in Madison, Wisc.
