Chris Horschel has been promoted to Director of Sports Medicine, the College of Charleston announced recently. His promotion will take affect in early July.
Horschel, a native of Grant, Fla., replaces Michelle Futrell who accepted a full-time faculty position in the nationally accredited CofC Athletic Training Education program in the Health and Human Performance Department.
"I am very excited to have been promoted to Director of Sports Medicine," said Horschel, who officially takes over in July. "Being an alum I have immense pride and expectations for our program, athletics, and the institution as a whole. Michelle has done a wonderful job in setting a high standard of care and service for our athletes and I plan to continue that standard."
Horschel served two years as an assistant athletic trainer, in charge of men's basketball, equestrian, women's golf, cheerleading, and dance.
"Michelle Futrell has performed admirably as our Director of Sports Medicine for many years," said Director of Athletics Joe Hull. "We wish her the very best as she moves to a full-time professor role in Health and Human Performance. Chris is a graduate of the College who has trained with Michelle and served as a top assistant in our Sports Medicine department the past two years. The coaches whose teams work directly with Chris, including men's Basketball, rave about his work ethic, skill and knowledge. We are delighted that Chris Horschel will be leading our Sports Medicine unit. He will do a terrific job."
Prior to joining CofC Horschel was as an athletic trainer at Bridgewater from 2003-08. From 2001-03, Horschel was the athletic trainer at The Citadel where he earned his master's degree in Education. He also worked as an orthopedic cast technician at MUSC from 1998-00.
Horschel served in the U.S. Navy from 1992-98 as a Hospital Corpsman.
Horschel earned a degree in Physical Education with a concentration in athletic training from the College of Charleston in 2001. He is certified by the NATA and is also an American Red Cross Instructor for CPR/AED Essentials. He also serves as an Approved Clinical Instructor for the undergraduate athletic training curriculum program.
