CHARLESTON, S.C. - The home-hosted SAISA Match Race Championships and the Hoyt Intersectional on Oct. 22-23 is up next for the top-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team.
The Cougars will sail junior skipper Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.), senior team captain Zeke Horowitz (Sarasota, Fla.) and junior Laura Beigel (Severna Park, Md.) or sophomore Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.) at the SAISA Match Race.
CofC will also send the A-Division team of junior skipper Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.) and the B-Division team of freshman skipper Nick Johnstone (Newport, R.I.) and freshman crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) to the Hoyt Intersectional hosted by Brown in Providence, R.I.
"We are very excited for district match racing qualifiers this weekend at home," CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. "Unfortunately, our rock star "bow woman" Sarah Somes suffered a minor concussion at practice and will be unable to compete this weekend. We still feel confident we can earn a berth to Nationals on Sept. 18-20 in San Francisco, where Sarah will be back on board.
"We also feel quite confidant heading up to Brown this weekend. Ben Spector has been sailing great with team captain Alyssa Aitken. The freshman team of Nick Johnstone and Ali Blumenthal are very fast. If we put the boat in nice spots and make good decisions, our boat speed should lead us to the top."
For fans interested in supporting the Cougars and attending this weekend's home regatta, the best place to spectate is the outside wall of the marina at the Walker Sailing Center. Racing begins at 10 a.m. (ET) and will take place right on the Cooper River by the marina in Charleston Harbor.
