Cougars Successful at Graham Hall Team Race, Eckerd Intersectional

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston coed sailing team had a successful weekend of competition winning the 2011 Graham Hall Team Race hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and the Eckerd Intersectional regatta hosted by Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Cougars raced well in the Gold round robin and was among the final four teams seeded into the knockout round, where Boston College and Roger Williams College squared off in the first semifinal, while CofC and Georgetown went head-to-head in the second semifinal. The Cougars and BC advanced to the finals where CofC prevailed with a 2-0 regatta victory over the Eagles.
Skippers Jackson Benvenutti (Bay Saint Louis, Miss.), Zeke Horowitz (Sarasota, Fla.) and Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) led CofC to the win behind the crew of junior Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.), sophomore Cory DeCollibus (Duxbury, Mass.), Perry Emsiek (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and junior Sam Stokes (Norfolk, Va.).
In addition, the Cougars turned in a first-place finish among the 11-team Eckerd Intersectional field with a total of 47 points ahead of Salve Regina (85), Yale (104), Boston College (106) and Fordham (115). CofC was paced by sophomore skipper Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and freshman crew Jenny Powell (Blue Hill, Maine) with 14 first-place points in the A-Division race and skipper Chris Banholzer (Hartland, Wis.) and sophomore crew Alexis Scott (Newport Beach, Calif.) with 33 second-place points in the B-Division.
The Cougars also placed fourth at the home-hosted 2011 Charleston Women's Intersectional regatta held at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center on the Cooper River. Georgetown claimed the team victory with 111 points followed by Yale (116) and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (117) for second-and third-place honors. CofC sailed A-Division with junior skipper Corey Hall (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and sophomore crew Sarah Scudder (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and Molly O'Neil (Narragansett, R.I.), who turned in a fifth-place finish with 72 points, and freshman skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) and sophomore crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) and Deb Ong (Singapore, Singapore) with 49 points for second place in the B-Division.
CofC will continue competition over the spring break holiday the weekend of March 12-13 at the Navy Spring Women's Regatta hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., the St. Mary's Team Race hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland in Mt. St. Mary's College, Md., and the John Jackson Team Race hosted by Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
