CHARLESTON, S.C. - The No. 7-ranked College of Charleston sailing team looks to continue its winning ways competing this weekend at the St. Mary's College of Maryland Intersectional hosted by St. Mary's on Sept. 24-25 in St. Mary's City, Md., as well as playing host to two qualifying regattas, the SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship and SAISA Fall Women's Championship, at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Racing will begin at 10 a.m. (ET).
Last weekend, the Cougars swept the Hatch Brown and Nevins Trophy and solidified their stance as one of the nation's top teams to reckon with this fall. It's not a surprise CofC has flourished early on in the season with four ICSA All-Americans on this year's roster along with the added depth of seasoned veterans and highly-skilled underclassmen.
Those participating at St. Mary's will be senior skipper Sam Stokes (Norfolk, Va.) and senior All-American crew Perry Emsiek (Corona del Mar, Calif.) in A-Division and junior skipper Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Alyssa Aitken (Sandwich, Mass.) in B-Division.
"After a tremendous weekend of sailing, we are looking forward to another great showing at the St. Mary's Intersectional this weekend in Maryland," CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. "We are also looking forward to hosting the women's singlehanded qualifier at home."
The first-and second-place finishers of the SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship will qualify for the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals hosted by Northwestern on Nov. 4-6 in Chicago. The Cougars will sail senior Corey Hall (St. Petersburg, Fla.), sophomore Carly Shevitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.), freshman Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and freshman Mallory Buechler (Pensacola, Fla.) on Saturday.
Hall, who is a two-time singlehanded nationals qualifier, will also skipper A-Division at the SAISA Fall Women's Championship on Sunday along with sophomore crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.). Sophomore Grace Lucas will skipper B-Division with junior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.). The top three will qualify for the Atlantic Coast Women's Championship hosted by SUNY Maritime on Nov. 12-13 in Throggs Neck, N.Y.
In addition, the Cougars will send four sailors to the North Points #3 regatta hosted by Clemson on Sept. 24 in Clemson, S.C. They include sophomore skipper Amy Kubie (Norwalk, Conn.) and junior crew Mary Massalon (Charleston, S.C.) in A-Division and freshman skipper Connor Murphy (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman crew Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) in B-Division.
