CHARLESTON, S.C. - Senior Corey Hall (St. Petersburg, Fla.) has competed on the nationally-ranked College of Charleston sailing team the last four years. She is a three-time ICSA Singlehanded Nationals qualifier majoring in business administration and hospitality and tourism. Hall and her younger brother, Cameron, are one of several brother-sister duos to have sailed for the tradition-rich program through the years next to the O'Reilly twins, Alana and Russ, in 2006-07. She placed a career-best ninth out of a field of 18 at the singlehanded nationals regatta this past fall in Chicago, Ill.
Q: When did you start sailing and how did you get involved in the sport?
A: "I started sailing when I was 9 years old with my younger brother, Cameron, who is also on the sailing team, and a junior. We took a class together when we were younger and ended up loving it and sailed all summer long. We started sailing for our yacht club team, then our high school team and finally came to the College to sail."
Q: How did you decide on College of Charleston?
A: "I decided to come to the College of Charleston, because I knew I wanted to go to school somewhere warm and Charleston looked like such a beautiful city when I visited, and you can't get much better sailing conditions than this."
Q: What has been your most memorable experience on the sailing team?
A: "I have a lot of memorable experiences. I have enjoyed the team morale and doing things with my teammates the most. I have made a lot of good friendships with people who are currently on the team and past members. It has really been an enjoyable college memory."
Q: What will you miss most about sailing for the College?
A: "I am going to miss the traveling. I love the fact that we get to go to all of these beautiful places that you wouldn't normally go to. Sailing is great as you are always on the water, you get to travel to all of these cool venues and you get to see everyone from the sailing community. Everyone is tight-knit in the sailing community as we have all grown up together sailing."
Q: Do you think that coming to the College of Charleston and being apart of the sailing team has better equipped you for your future?
A: "Coming to the College and sailing here has definitely helped equip me for my future. It has helped me manage my time really well, has kept me very busy and has introduced me to a lot of people. Just going to school in Charleston, and sailing in Charleston has been lovely."
Q: What do you plan on doing after graduation?
A: I will be graduating in May with a degree in business administration and hospitality and tourism. I hope to do something with event planning. I would love to either stay in Charleston or go back home to Florida. I am still in the process of trying to figure that out, but am excited to see what the future holds."
Q: How do you plan on finishing up your last semester of sailing at the College?
A: "I personally hope to finish in the top 5 of my division and top 5 of every event. We have nationals at the end of May in Texas, and hopefully, we should qualify to go there. Again, I really want to try and finish in the top 5 there and finish the year out strong. We had a very good fall semester, so this spring, we are hoping for more good things."
