Cougars Finish Among Top Half Of Regatta Field at Truxtun Umsted

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The third-ranked College of Charleston coed sailing team placed ninth at the Truxtun Umsted regatta hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy over the weekend in Annapolis, Md., while the second-ranked CofC women finished 12th at the St. Mary's Women's Invitational hosted by St. Mary's College of Maryland in St. Mary's City, Md.
The Cougars, who were the defending Truxtun Umsted champions, came up short at the 20-team field regatta with a total of 213 points. Junior All-American skipper Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Perry Emsiek (Corona del Mar, Calif.) came in 12th in A-Division, while junior All-American skipper Zeke Horowitz (Sarasota, Fla.) and junior crew Cory DeCollibus (Duxbury, Mass.) finished 11th in a three-way head-to-head tiebreaker with Navy and Yale in B-Division.
Freshman Chris Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) placed ninth in C-Division with 54 points and junior Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) turned in the highest-finish of all CofC sailors at the event with 40 points good enough for fifth in D-Division.
In women's competition at the St. Mary's Invitational, senior Corey Hall (St. Petersburg, Fla.) skippered A-Division to a 13th-place finish with senior All-American Alyssa Aitken crew (Sandwich, Mass.) and sophomore crew Carly Shevitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) followed by a 10th-place finish in B-Division by sophomore skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) and junior crew Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) with three top 5 finishes in nine races.
In addition, the fifth-ranked CofC team racing squad finished third out of seven schools that competed in the Mendelblatt Team Race hosted by South Florida and Eckerd College on Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Cougars earned a berth in the Final Four stage of the event after compiling an 11-7 record in the first three round-robin rotations.
The Cougars were represented by junior Chris Banholzer (Hartland, Wis.), junior Michael Ramming (Newport Coast, Calif.) and junior Brendan Faria (Middletown, R.I.) as well as junior Sarah Scudder (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), freshman Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.) and freshman Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.).
CofC will return to competition this coming weekend at the Szambecki Team Race hosted by Old Dominion on March 24-25 in Norfolk, Va.
