CHARLESTON, S.C. - After winning its first-ever ICSA/APS Team Race National Championship title in program history and the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy, awarded annually to the best overall collegiate team in the nation, the College of Charleston sailing team heads into the new season ranked No. 3 in Sailing World's Preseason College Coed Rankings, presented by Sperry Top-Sider, released on Monday.
The Cougars received four first-place votes behind defending ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy national champion and top-ranked Georgetown and No. 2-ranked Yale. They return an all-star senior cast comprised of All-American skippers Mac Mace (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Ben Spector (Santa Clarita, Calif.) in addition to the return of two-time Olympian Juan Maegli (Guatemala City, Guatemala), who finished ninth overall in the Men's Laser event at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.
"We are very excited to start the new season," CofC Head Coach Ward Cromwell said. "This may be the best sailing team we've ever had here at The College. We look forward to seeing what we can accomplish with such a talented group."
The women, led by senior crews Cory DeCollibus (Duxbury, Mass.) and Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), were ranked No. 10 in Sailing World's Preseason Women's Rankings.
The Cougars will open the fall season with the home-hosted SAISA Open N/S #1 regatta on Sept. 8-9 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
