CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The College of Charleston men's and women's cross country teams saw their season come to a close on Friday, after the Cougars gave their best in a quality performance at the NCAA Southeastern Regionals, hosted by the University of Virginia.
“I think we did well on a very challenging course today,” said head coach Amy Seago. “We had some individuals who were able to finish their season on a high note and we even had a couple of PR's today – which was great.”
On the men's side, the Cougars were led by Mackenzie Johnston (Hilton Head, S.C.), who finished the day 86th out of 239 competitors with a time of 31:07.1. Just behind Johnston was Adam Seften (Bolton, Conn.) who logged a time of 32:16.9.
As a team, the men finished in 32nd place, out of 35 competing teams.
“I thought the guy's ran well overall,” said assistant coach Jason Bryan. “We had some big races from Mackenzie and Adam and I'm glad with how they were able to cap off their season. Most of our team is young and I think we have a lot to look forward to with this group.”
The women were led by junior Hayley McMahon (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), who ran a time of 22:35.4 s well as Danielle Sams (Goose Creek, S.C.), who ran a great race, finishing with a time of 22:55.9. Freshman Carlee Cassidy tweaked her knee on the downhill and had to pull out the race, while senior leader Elle Brewer capped off a great career that saw her overcome numerous injuries to finish with a time of 24:30.8.
The cougar women finished 31st out of 38 teams.
“Ultimately, I believe that we can walk away from this meet with knowledge that will help us in the future. Patience is the key to success, whether in distance running or anything else worth accomplishing in life. Combing that virtue with appreciation for what it takes to be at the top, having the desire to stay there and adding in a whole lot of hard work – I believe that we have the necessary ingredients to improve as a team.”
