MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – For the fifth consecutive year, the College of Charleston coed sailing team won the SAISA Fall Coed Dinghy Championship regatta as a total of 12 races were sailed over the weekend on the Cooper River and Crab Bank in Charleston Harbor.
The Cougars (51 points) claimed a 23-point victory over second-place conference rival South Florida (74 points). Eckerd College (90) placed third, Jacksonville (119) fourth and Clemson (145) fifth. A total of 12 conference teams participated in the event where sailors were greeted by light and shifty Northwest wind on Saturday.
The first two races were sailed on the Cooper River, while the shifty wind and ebb tie moved the event over to Crab Bank. The wind on the bank was steadier and the current was more in line with the course. The final eight races took place on the Cooper River with a slightly more cooperative wind and tide. All courses were a trapezoid configuration.
CofC placed first in both divisions behind a six-point victory over USF by sophomore skipper Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and junior All-American crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) in A-Division. Nine points separated the Cougars over second-place Jacksonville in B-Division courtesy of great sailing by sophomore skipper Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and sophomore crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.).
The Cougars will head to nationals next as four members of the squad compete at the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals hosted by Sail Newport on Nov. 8-10 in Newport, R.I. The offshore sailing team will race at the Kennedy Offshore Cup hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy on Nov. 8-10 in Annapolis, Md., while CofC hosts the SAISA/MAISA regatta on Nov. 9-10 at the J. Stewart Sailing Complex.
