
CofC Women's Sailing Places Seventh at Nationals

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The ninth-ranked College of Charleston women's sailing team placed seventh overall on the final day of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Sperry Top-Sider Women's National Championship regatta held on Friday afternoon at Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove.
The Cougars automatically qualified for the event as SAISA women's conference champions. They tallied 279 points combined in the 18-team, two-division regatta behind 2013 women's national champion Dartmouth (203 points), second-place St. Mary's College of Maryland (241 points), third-place Cornell (267 points), fourth-place Boston College (268 points), fifth-place Stanford (268 points) and sixth-place Yale (272 points).
CofC placed 10th in a head-to-head tiebreaker with Boston College in A-Division behind junior skipper Grace Lucas (Little Silver, N.J.) and crews Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) in races 1-4 and Sarah Somes (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) in races 5-6.
In B-Division, the Cougars made up ground with sophomore skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and junior crew Elizabeth Chambers (Mooresville, N.C.) turning in eight top five finishes through 18 races including a win in Race No. 13. Cooper and Chambers combined for a fourth-place finish.
Up next, CofC will look to defend its 2012 national title at the ICSA/APS Team Race National Championship on May 25-27 and then compete for the ICSA/Gill Coed National Championship on May 28-30 in St. Petersburg, Fla.
