MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – After a long weekend of impressive sailing, the College of Charleston coed and women's sailing teams were close runner-ups at both of its weekend regattas held at home and afar.
Dismal wind conditions on Charleston Harbor led to an early finish, leaving the CofC coed team in second place by a very marginal number (100 points) to the U.S. Naval Academy (89 points). The Cougars also sailed a women's team at the event as they performed well and finished fifth (125 points) out of the 18 top-level intercollegiate teams competing in the field.
Junior Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) skippered the coed squad to fifth-place finish in A-Division (58 points) with senior crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.), while senior skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and junior crew Charlotte Saxe (Wilton, Conn.) placed eighth for the women (81 points).
In B-Division, the Cougars finished 2-3 as freshman skipper Stefano Peschiera and freshman crew Holley Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) were runner-up to Navy, who claimed a nine-point victory. CofC used the rotation of junior skipper Sarah Mackey (Bellevue, Wash.) and sophomore crew Bayley Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) in races 1-4 and freshman skipper Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) and senior crew Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.) in races 5-10 for the women's squad.
After having to battle with extreme wind shifts at the University of South Florida Women's regatta in St. Petersburg, Fla., the CofC women sealed second-place honors by holding on to their podium spot from the previous day of racing on Tampa Bay.
Host USF (142 points) won by an eight-point margin of victory over the Cougars (150 points) followed by third-place UCSB (175 points), fourth-place Eckerd College (190 points), fifth-place Miami (261 points), sixth-place Jacksonville (272 points) and seventh-place Hawai'i (289 points).
Sailing for CofC was skipper Nikki Medley and junior crew Michaela Reynolds (Providence, R.I.) in B-Division (5th, 72 points) and skipper Eliot Caple and junior crew Katie Dowling (Coronado, Calif.) in A-Division (7th, 78 points).
The Cougars will compete this weekend at the home-hosted Charleston women's regatta on Feb. 28-March 1 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex.
