CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 2-ranked College of Charleston women's sailing team won the SAISA Women's Championship title on Saturday in St. Petersburg, Fla., while the No. 2-ranked coed sailing team placed third out of 20 of the nation's best teams at the Admiral's Cup on Sunday in Kings Point, N.Y.
A very light day two of competition ended the top-level regatta hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy early, securing the Cougars a podium finish at the three-division, invite-only Admiral's Cup. Nine races were completed in total, leaving CofC two points out of second (169 points) behind first-place Old Dominion (157 points) and second-place Stanford (167 points).
Junior Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) skippered A-Division to a runner-up finish behind the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with senior All-American crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.). In B-Division, junior skipper Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and junior crew Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) placed fifth, while junior Reed Baldridge (Clear Lake, Texas) finished third out of 20 in the laser C-Division.
Down at Eckerd College, the CofC women dominated the eight-race series – never finishing lower than third in both the A-and B-fleets defeating conference foes Eckerd, South Florida, Miami (Fla.), Jacksonville, Clemson, UNCW and New College of Florida.
The Cougars were led to victory by senior skipper Clerc Cooper (New Orleans, La.) and junior crew Charlotte Saxe (Wilton, Conn.) in A-Division as well as freshman skipper Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.), senior crew Morgan Buckley (Yonkers, N.Y.), and junior crew Michaela Reynolds (Providence, R.I.) in B-Division.
The conference win qualifies CofC for a berth to the ICSA Women's National Championship hosted by Sail Newport on May 25-28 in Newport, R.I.
Up ahead, the Cougars close out conference competition before nationals with the home-hosted SAISA Coed Championship on May 1-2 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
