CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston track and field team will make the six-and-a-half hour trek north to Williamsburg, Va. on Thursday where the Cougars are set to participate in the Colonial Athletic Association's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Set to take place May 1-2 at Zable Stadium, the Championships will be hosted by the College of William & Mary. Field action opens at 9:30 am with the javelin throw, followed in quick succession by the hammer and long jump. Track action then begins in earnest at 1:00 pm where the Cougars will be competing on numerous fronts as well as in the heptathlon, which is also slated for Friday.
Saturday then marks the second and final day of action with the women's shot put at 10:00 am, followed by the high jump and discus throw. Following the conclusion of the heptathlon, the Championships finish with 10 track events, many of which the Cougars have seen recent success, including recent record breaking performances at the Georgia Tech and Spring Break Invitationals.
Admission is free to the public and live results with be posted on the CAA Championship Homepage.
“I'm excited about this weekend,” said College of Charleston head coach Amy Seago. “We've had a lot of personal bests recently and we've also had some people who we think can reach that next level. The sprinters are doing a good job, the jumpers are doing well, our throwers have been very consistent and our distance runners are motivated – I think across the board we're ready to go.”
Headlining for the Cougars at this year's event will be the exploits of seniors McMahon and Tiffany Sisk as well as sophomore sensation Julisa Tindall.
While McMahon heads in to the race on the heels of a tremendous performance in Atlanta, Sisk – the defending CAA shot-put champion – will seek out her third career conference tournament title after also claiming top honors at the SoCon Outdoor Championships her freshman season.
After impressing throughout the season, including a great jump at the 2015 ECAC Indoor Championships, sophomore high-jumper Julisa Tindall will be looking to improve upon her seventh place finish from one season ago. Tindall has been tremendous for the Cougars since arriving prior to last season's campaign and currently lays claim to both the program's top indoor (1.84 meters) and outdoor marks (1.78 meters).
Also expected to make an impact for the Cougars is senior RoShani Glover, junior Alexia Neal and sophomore Cara Butcher. While Glover looks poised in the triple jump, Neal will be competing in the 400 meter hurdles and enters the event ranked third in the field. The ever-improving Cassidy appears ready to make her mark as well in the steeplechase, also entering the competition as the No. 3 ranked competitor. Cassidy is one of three Cougars participating in the steeplechase event, joining fellow ranked teammates Cara Butcher (5th) and Kornelia Kostka (8th)
Competing against the Cougars will be defending conference champions Delaware, as well as 2014 runners-up Northeastern, 11-time champions and hosts William & Mary, UNC Wilmington, James Madison and the Tigers of Towson University.
There is free admission to the event, which is held at Zable Stadium.
