NEWPORT, R.I. – The College of Charleston sailing team advanced to the Final Four of the ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship and placed fourth overall after a series of close races against Yale, Boston College and Stanford in the finals held on Sunday on Narragansett Bay.
The format for the three-day event was a series of round robins. In the first round on Friday, all 16 teams raced against each other to determine places 9-14. The top eight teams then advanced to a single round robin, which determined places 5-8 on Saturday.
After three days of intense competition against 15 other top team-race programs in the country, the Cougars posted a respectable 17-8 record in the finals. They went head-to-head with eventual national champion Yale (21-4), runner-up B.C. (19-6) and third-place Stanford (17-8).
Sailing for CofC was junior skipper Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.); junior skipper Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and junior Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.); and junior skipper Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) with senior crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.), junior Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.) and senior Chase Shaw (Bacliff, Texas).
Up next, the Cougars will compete in the final regatta of the national championship series with the Gill ICSA Coed National Championship scheduled for June 1-4 at Sail Newport.
