CHARLESTON, S.C. – The No. 3-ranked College of Charleston sailing team won the SAISA Spring Coed Championships and has now officially qualified for all three Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Spring National Championship regattas to be held at the end of May and early June in Newport, R.I.
Eleven races at home on Charleston Harbor was all CofC needed to claim the victory against 10 other SAISA teams posting a number of Top-3 finishes in dominating fashion. The Cougars sailed against South Florida, Eckerd College, Florida, Jacksonville, Clemson, UNCW, New College of Florida, NC State, Georgia Tech and Rollins College.
Junior Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.) skippered A-Division to a first-place, one-point victory over South Florida with senior crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.), while junior Ryan Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) skippered B-Division to another top finish by an 18-point margin over second-place USF with junior crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.).
All three national championship events will be hosted by Sail Newport beginning with the ICSA Women's Nationals on May 25-28, the ICSA Team Race Nationals on May 29-31 and the ICSA Coed Nationals on June 1-4.
The Cougars have already won two national championship titles this school year with victories at the 2014 ICSA Offshore Sailing Keelboat National Championships (Kennedy Cup) and freshman Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) claiming the 2014 ICSA Men's Singlehanded National Championship in the lasers. Both were won back in the fall.
