CofC Sailing Awarded Leonard B. Fowle Trophy

NEWPORT, R.I. –For the sixth time in school history, the College of Charleston coed sailing team won the prestigious Leonard B. Fowle Trophy, awarded annually to the best all-around sailing team in the nation by the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).
The Cougars, guided by CofC Director of Sailing Greg Fisher, Head Coach Ward Cromwell and Assistant Coach Mitch Hall, previously won this top honor in college sailing in 1986, 1988, 1998, 2007 and 2012.
This came at the heels of CofC finishing the spring season with a respectable fourth-place finish at the ICSA Gill Coed National Championship on Thursday at Sail Newport.
The Cougars totaled 299 points across the 18-race, 18-team fielded series behind first-place Yale (186 points), second-place U.S. Coast Guard Academy (255 points) and third-place Boston College (265 points).
The squad beat out 14 other teams in the finals after having won the semifinal qualifier. They were led by sixth-place finishes in both divisions by junior skipper Jake Reynolds (San Diego, Calif.) and senior All-American crew Ali Blumenthal (Bellport, N.Y.) in A-Division and junior skipper Dodge Rees (Pensacola, Fla.), senior crew Tierney Driscoll (Bayport, N.Y.) in races 1-6, 10-14 and junior crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.) in races 7-9, 15-18.
The Cougars also placed fifth out of 18 teams at the ICSA Women's National Championship on May 28 and fourth out of 16 teams at the ICSA Team Race National Championship on May 31.
