Cougars Sail To Sixth-Place Finish At Women's Nationals

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston women's sailing team sailed to a sixth-place finish at the Sperry Women's National Championship Finals on Friday, as Alie Toppa and Paris Henken (Coronado, Calif.) each earned All-America Honorable Mention honors.
The Cougars qualified comfortably for nationals with a fourth-place performance in the Sperry Women's Western Semifinal on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the semifinal, Charleston totaled 95 points to cement its place in the finals by nearly 100 points.
Yale took home the national championship with a low team score of 185 points, and finished the event 23 points ahead of second-place Boston College. Charleston finished the finals with 287 points – including 127 in B-Division – to beat out seventh-place Dartmouth for sixth by four points. The Cougars totaled 160 points in A-Division and 127 in B-Division.
Toppa and her crew of sophomores Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) sailed to a ninth-place finish in A-Division with 160 points, which included a win in race three on Thursday. Henken skippered the Cougars to a sixth-place performance in B-Division with 127 points. She and her crew of freshman Kelly-Ann Arrindell (Port-of-Spain, Trinidad) and senior Bayley Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) posted six top-five race finishes, including five in the top three.
The Cougars will next compete in the three-day LaserPerformance Team Race Championship, which is set to begin on Saturday, May 27 and run through Monday, May 29. Stefano Peschiera (Lima, Peru) and Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) will anchor the College in A-Division, with the duos of Jack Cusick (Fairfield, Conn.) and Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.), and Christophe Killian (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) rounding out a formidable lineup for the Cougars.
