NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. --- The College of Charleston sailing team capped the fall season with a fifth-place performance at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Match Race National Championship this weekend.
Charleston battled challenging conditions, a talented fleet, and a light breeze throughout the weekend. Sailing for the Cougars were senior Augie Dale (Pewaukee, Wis.), senior RJ Porter (Fontana, Wis.), junior William Curtiss (Lake Bluff, Ill.), and junior Laura Masterson (Kemah, Texas).
The Cougars finished round-robin sailing with two wins against Texas A&M Galveston and Washington, and placed second to SUNY Maritime College in the quarterfinals. After bouncing back with a win over Dartmouth in the 5th to 8th A race, the Cougars crossed the line ahead of Jacksonville in the 5/6 race to finish fifth.
The Cougars will next set sail in the Rose Bowl on Saturday, January 5, and Sunday, January 6 in Newport Beach, Calif.
