SAVANNAH, Ga. – The College of Charleston equestrian team finished second at the IHSA Zone 5 Finals at the Savannah College of Art and Design's Ronald C. Waranch Equestrian Center on Saturday.
SCAD won the Championship with 48 points followed by the Reserve Champion Cougars with 39 points.
"We got off to a slow start in the over fences part of the show posting only 10 points after three classes," CofC Head Coach Bob Story said. "One of our biggest strengths is the ability to focus and not panic when we get behind. After the fence classes, SCAD had 19 points and Berry College had 16 points, while we had 10 points."
Junior Sophia Meserve turned in a second-place finish in Team Intermediate Flat, while sophomore Gabrielle Bernier rode to a second-place finish in Team Novice Flat. The Cougars were closing the gap, but only a point at a time.
Sophomore Elif Caynak received second in Team Walk/Trot with the Berry rider finishing fifth. At this point of the IHSA Zone Finals competition, the team was one point out of second place. Sophomore Samantha Bledsoe took the blue ribbon in Team Walk/Trot/Canter putting CofC up by one over now third-place Berry. Junior Shannon Rice was the last team rider of the day in Team Open Flat.
"There is nothing that seems to faze Shannon," Story said. "She drew a horse named Maverick that we know quite well. We didn't say a lot to each other before she entered the ring. I just told her to ride the hair off him and boy did she ever."
Rice took the blue ribbon sealing the second-place finish for College of Charleston.
Sophomore Elizabeth High qualified for the IHSA National Championship by winning her Individual Walk/Trot class. Senior Rio Parker was third in Individual Intermediate Fences, while Meserve finished in fourth place in Individual Novice Fences. Sophomore Molly Coyle finished sixth in Individual Novice Flat and sophomore Ruby Gonzales placed sixth in individual Walk/Trot/Canter.
