RICHMOND, Va. – College of Charleston sophomore Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) was tabbed Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Golfer of the Year as selected by the league's nine head coaches and announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Sass was the 2018 CAA Championship individual medalist, Most Outstanding Performer and earned a spot on the All-CAA First Team. He posted a three-stroke victory at 3-under par to earn an automatic individual berth to NCAA Regionals. Sass had an average score of 72.10 over 30 rounds this past season for the Cougars.
This is the second major award for Sass in back-to-back years as he was named the 2017 CAA Rookie of the Year as a freshman. It marked the fourth time in the last five years in which a CofC men's golfer has been named CAA Golfer of the Year – a short list that also includes former greats John Jonas (2014 and 2015) and William Rainey (2017).
Joining Sass on the All-CAA First Team was sophomore Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.), who boasted a team-best 71.80 stroke average, won his first collegiate tournament in the fall and reset the school record for lowest individual round (62). Sophomore Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) was recognized on the All-CAA Second Team after three Top-15 finishes and being named CAA Men's Golfer of the Week twice during the season.
Sass will learn his postseason destination as the 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship Selection Show will be aired on Wednesday, May 2 at 6 p.m. (ET) on the Golf Channel. Regionals will be played on May 14-16 and this year's six regional sites are: Raleigh, N.C., Bryan, Texas, Columbus, Ohio, Kissimmee, Fla., Norman, Okla. and Stockton, Calif.
