MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team battled tough competition and varying conditions en route to a third-place performance at the Phebe Corckran King Women's, and a fourth-place showing at the Mendelblatt Team Race over the weekend.
Sophomore skipper Marian Williams (Sai Kung, Hong Kong, China) and senior crew Elizabeth Mignon (Bay Head, N.J.) delivered a nine-point victory in B-Division to pace the Cougars to a third-place finish at the Phebe Corckran King Women's on Saturday and Sunday at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex. The duo finished lower than third in only one of 10 rotations to finish the regatta with 24 points.
Junior Liza Toppa (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) skippered A-Division to 57 points alongside senior crew Caroline Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.), as the Cougars placed third overall with 81 points. George Washington won the regatta with 58 points, beating second-place Stanford by nine.
The Cougars battled to a fourth-place finish at the ever-competitive Mendelblatt Team Race in St. Petersburg, Fla. with an 8-7 record. Charleston started strong with a 3-2 mark in the first round, which was good for third heading into the second round. A 4-1 performance in round two improved the Cougars' position further, lifting The College into second place entering Sunday's third and final round.
Grueling conditions and stiff competition denied the Cougars' hopes of completing the comeback, as Charleston went 1-4 in round three to drop into fourth before the regatta was called due to weather. Ryan Ratliff, Carter Cameron (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), and Will Whitmore (Norfolk, Va.) skippered for the Cougars, alongside crews Maxwell Williams (Denver, Colo.), Oliver Parsons (Stonington, Conn.), and Hunter Skinner (El Lago, Texas).
The Cougars are back in action for four regattas next weekend: Spring Ocean Race on Saturday, March 2 at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex; Bob Bavier Team Race on Saturday and Sunday, March 3; North Points #2 on Saturday in Clemson, S.C.); and Old Dominion Women's on Saturday and Sunday in Norfolk, Va.
