NEWPORT, R.I. --- Skipper Jack Brown and crew Payton Alexander made a late charge in the final race of the championship to pull ahead several boats of Yale and lift the third-ranked College of Charleston to a five-point win in the Gil Coed National Championship on Friday at the Sail Newport Sailing Center.
"The Cougars fought incredibly hard to come back in several races today en route to securing this national championship," Director of Sailing Kevin Jewett said. "It was one of the closest coed championship regattas on record. We are so proud of how our team showed grit and determination in this victory."
Racing was delayed until shortly after noon due to lack of wind in the harbor. A southwest wind filled in to begin the afternoon and stayed light to moderate through the final horn. Stronger pressure and hiking conditions greeted the last races of the day with oscillating shifts across the racecourse forcing the sailors to stay in phase and sail fast throughout the day.
Charleston finished the regatta with 205 points to beat out second-place Yale's total of 210 after two days of tight and competitive fleet racing came down to the final push to the pin. Senior skipper Augie Dale and junior crew Katie Lounsbury guided the Cougars to a three-point victory in A-Division with 79 points, 10 top-five's and five race wins. The duo finished outside of the top seven only twice and delivered a pair of its race wins in the final four rotations.
The Cougars placed fifth in B-Division with 126 points finishing two tallies ahead of Yale and one behind fourth-place Brown. Allie Toppa and Annabel Carrington represented the Maroon and White in rotations 1-8 and 11-14 turning in four top-five performances and a pair of seconds. Brown skippered the Cougars to a trio of top-five's in four races with Alexander.
