CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston senior Rachel Kim (Ellicott City, Md.) of women's soccer has been honored as this year's recipient of the prestigious J. Stewart Walker Cup, which the highest award given by the athletics department and the Charleston Athletic Fund to a deserving student-athlete.
The award is named after J. Stewart Walker, Jr., a member of the sailing program and 1978 CofC graduate, who was very active in athletics until his passing in 1983.
"Rachel is a most-deserving recipient of this year's J. Stewart Walker Cup Award," Director of Athletics Matt Roberts said. "During her time at CofC, Rachel has displayed the passion, leadership and integrity that this award represents. We are thankful for all she has done for the College of Charleston and are delighted we can recognize her with this distinguished award."
Nominees and past recipients of the award have made significant contributions to College of Charleston Athletics and displayed dedication to academic success with leadership and ability in a particular sport. They have also shown evidence of a spirit of helpfulness to others, high moral character and fair play both within and without the sports arena. Additionally, each recipient of the award has brought honor to the College of Charleston and the community through their athletic accomplishments.
Last fall, Kim played in eight games on the season for the Cougars with seven starts, before a season-ending injury. The midfielder and team captain netted a goal in the team's 2-1 season-opening victory against Stephen F. Austin.
During her four-year career, she was named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association Rookie Team in 2016 and All-CAA Second Team in 2018. Kim made 65 career appearances with 52 starts, four goals and one assist. She was CofC's nominee for the 2019-20 CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year presented by Sonabank.
"Rachel is a tremendous representative of the College of Charleston women's soccer program and, I believe, the standard to which all student-athletes here at CofC should be measured," Head Coach Christian Michner said. "She is a leader in our program and an all-conference selection on the field.
"But, that isn't what defines her or what makes her deserving of this award. It's who she is off-the-field and how she represents CofC Athletics in the classroom and in the community. She is the model student-athlete and strives to be the best she can be in everything that she does."
Kim has been an active member of the CofC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) the last three years. During her senior year, she served as SAAC President spending her time connecting with other CofC student-athletes in helping to create an amazing experience for her fellow peers. Kim helped organize various volunteer opportunities for student-athletes such as food drives and shoe collections.
In the summer of 2019, she represented The College at the CAA SAAC Leadership Summit in Delaware. Kim also represented SAAC and women's soccer as a speaker at several CofC Board of Trustees meetings.
In 2018 and 2019, she was the back-to-back recipient of the Most School Spirit Award, voted on by CofC student-athletes.
A CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll student all four years, Kim will graduate in May with a bachelor's degree in accounting and a minor in finance. Her post-grad plans include a summer internship with Aronson LLC, an accounting firm in Maryland.
The other three finalists for the J. Stewart Walker Cup Award included seniors Molly Coyle of equestrian, Cailin Dorsey of women's basketball and Victoria Huskey of women's golf.
