HUGER, S.C. – After back-to-back days of competition against the best riders in the region, College of Charleston junior Kate Coffey (Westford, Mass.) was crowned the IHSA Regional Cacchione Cup high point rider.
She became the first Cougar equestrian to win the region's highest award since IHSA National Cacchione Cup champion Eliza Hay in 2015. Coffey turned in a blue-ribbon ride in the Open Flat class and was reserve champion in Open Fences on Sunday at CofC's White Horses Boarding and Training Facility.
Senior captain Allyson Pace (Charlotte, N.C.) was the regional champion in Limit Fences, while senior Cassidy Hyatt (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the Senior Flat competition. Senior Beverly Davis (Concord, N.C.) was the reserve champion in Senior Flat.
As a team, the Cougars finished as reserve champion. It was the final competition of the season for the squad, as the IHSA National Championships were cancelled for the second year in a row due to COVID-19.
Had nationals happened, Coffey would have competed in the National Individual Championship, as all regional high point riders are eligible. She was also the reserve high point rider on Saturday during CofC's home show.
