WINNABOW, N.C. – Senior Tess Masselink broke a 10-year-old school record in the 6K and made the all-conference team for the third time in her career to highlight an outstanding day for the College of Charleston at the CAA Cross Country Championships.
Masselink posted a time of 20:37.6 to finish 13th and move past Dena O'Brien by 2.4 seconds for the top spot in Cougar history. Masselink also finished second at the CAA Meet in 2018 and 14th a year ago and missed becoming a four-time all-conference runner by one spot as a freshman in 2017.
Cate Ambrose moved up from seventh to third in the record book with a time of 20:40.7, just .7 behind O'Brien's previous school record. Ambrose placed 15th on Friday, her best finish at the conference meet, and was one spot shy of earning a spot on the All-CAA team.
Three other Cougars ran their way into the Top 10. Rhian Purves is now fifth (21:23.6), Kristen Cherry is sixth (21:28.1) and Emily Dorony is eighth (21:50.2). That trio finished 28th, 30th and 40th, respectively, as CofC finished sixth in the team standings.
Zac Palmer led the men in the 8K race with a time of 26:34.2, good for a 32nd place finish. Also scoring for the Cougars were Tyler Fish (35th, 26:49.7), Jackson Reid (36th, 26:57.5), William McCann (41st, 27:14.0) and Hammer Blair (42nd, 27:17.6). The CofC men were fifth in the team rankings.
