NEWPORT, R.I. --- Kelly-Ann Arrindell and
Benn Smith both battled grueling conditions and deep fields to finish fifth and sixth, respectively, at the ICSA Men's and Women's Singlehanded National Championships over the weekend.
Arrindell placed fifth at the women's national championship with 89 points from 14 races. The senior posted seven top-five finishes including a victory in race five. She edged out Boston College's Elizabeth Shanahan by one point and finished 18 points shy of a spot on the podium.
Smith led the way for the Cougars at the men's national championship finishing sixth with a 14-race total of 131 points. The senior placed among the top five in five races including a high finish of second in race 10. Freshman
Alex Gonzalez placed 24
th overall with a high finish of 11
th in the sixth race.
The Cougars return to the water on Tuesday, May 18 for day one of the ICSA Women's National Championship in Annapolis, Md.
