
Cougars Wrap Up Opening Weekend at Leukemia Cup, SAISA Open

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston offshore sailing team placed third and ninth at the Leukemia Cup on Saturday, and the coed team turned in a pair of top-eight performances at the SAISA Coed Open to conclude a busy opening weekend of the 2021 campaign for the Cougars.
Charleston entered two boats in this year's Leukemia Cup: Cougar and Soul. Cougar finished third with a crew of Sean Groskoph at driver, Braden Johnson at main, John McCarthy at primary trim, Emmi Triplett at secondary trim, Kate Herter at squirrel, Maggie Wilcox at pit, Nick Dunphey at mast and Cade Morris at bow. Soul placed ninth with a crew consisting of Connor Marion at driver, Skye Ehrhart at main, Julianna Corso at primary trim, Megan Fetterley at secondary trim, Hadley Walsh at squirrel, Kate Schmiege at pit, Evan Chenard at mast and Caroline Williams at bow.
The Cougars' coed team finished seventh at the SAISA Coed Open with 232 points. Freshman Charlie McKenzie skippered CofC to sixth place in A-Division with 112 points alongside fellow rookie Sophia Browne at crew. Christofor Tella, Jr. and Garrett Grenauer placed eighth in B-Division with 120 points.
Charleston's women's team finished eighth in the regatta with 270 points. Sophomore Grace Squires skippered the first 10 races for the Cougars in A-Division with Kiera O'Reardon taking the tiller for the final six races. Freshman Grace Beard crewed the first four races with Fredrikke Foss crewing races five through 16. The quartet accumulated 127 points to finish eighth in A-Division. Roxanne Snyder and Chloe Hudgins sailed to a 10th-place finish in B-Division with 143 points.
The Cougars will return to the water on Saturday, September 18 and Sunday, September 19 when Charleston hosts the 2021 SAISA Men's and Women's Singlehanded Championships at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex.
