
Cougars Cruise to Pair of Regatta Victories

CHARLESTON, S.C. --- The College of Charleston sailing team cruised to a pair of victories over the weekend at the Mendelblatt Team Race and North Points #2 to highlight a strong showing as the spring season gets into full swing.
The Cougars opened the weekend with a one-point victory at North Points #2 in Columbia, S.C. beating out Holy City foe The Citadel with 26 points. Freshmen Charlie McKenzie and Grace Beard finished second in A-Division with 11 points thanks to wins in races one, three and four. Freshmen Ethan Homberger and Leah Cody crossed the line ahead of the fleet in races three and four en route to a second-place finish in B-Division.
Charleston picked up its second win of the weekend on Saturday and Sunday at the Mendelblatt Team Race in St. Petersburg, Fla. edging out Miami via tiebreaker with an 8-2 record. The Cougars posted a 4-1 record in both rounds one and two highlighted by a 1-2-5 victory against the Hurricanes in round one. Axel Stordahl, Max Anker, Pierce Ornstein and Brandon Geller rotated through the skipper position for the Cougars with Noelle Owen, Anna Sherry, Chloe Hudgins and Jack Sutton each crewing at least one race.
The Cougars rounded out the weekend finishing fifth at the Phebe Corckran King Women's Team Race in the Ashley River with a 9-10 record. Charleston posted a 3-3 record in each of the first two rounds but a 2-4 mark in round three saw the Cougars miss out on a spot in the final four. Kiera O'Reardon, Fredrikke Foss and Grace Squires skippered for the Cougars with Roxanne Snyder, Lucy Klempen and Kalea Woodard crewing.
Charleston will return to the water next weekend when the Cougars host the Bob Bavier Team Race on Saturday and Sunday at the J. Stewart Walker Sailing Complex, and also travel to the Green Wave Women's Team Race on Saturday and Sunday in New Orleans, La.
