CofC Equestrian Wins Region, Posts Several Strong Performances at Zone 5 Region 3 Finals

The Cougars won their 30th all-time Region championship
CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston Equestrian captured the 30th Region Championship in program history on March 5, winning the Region by 28 points. The Cougars earned High Point Team honors on six of nine competition days during the 2021-22 campaign en route to the Region Title.
Head coach Natasha V. McCarthy was tabbed Coach of the Year after steering the Cougars to a decorated season and CofC's team horse Lionel was named Horse of the Year. Senior Kate Coffey punctuated another stellar season with the Sportsmanship Award and also by receiving Regional Reserve Champion honors in the Overall Open Division.
On Sunday at the Zone 5 Region 3 Finals, the Cougars recognized the senior class and sent them out in style on a memorable day at White Horses Boarding and Training Facility. The Cougars posted several strong individual performances at the Region 3 Finals. Freshman Kathryn McCarthy was Champion in the Open Flat competition and Reserve Champion in the Open Fences. She qualified for the IHSA Zone Finals in both events.
Coffey added a victory in the Open Fences competition and tacked on a Reserve Champion finish in the Open Flat to punch her ticket to Zones in both classes.
Other impressive results included Connelly Grant placing second in the Intermediate Over Fences event to qualify for Zones. Hailey Pendl and Lauren Katz took third and fourth, respectively in the Limit Flat and Emma Avent finished fifth in the Intermediate Over Fences. Senior Eleanore Fish was Reserve Champion in CofC's Senior Flat Championship.
With the overall team Regional Championship, CofC qualified for the Zone 5 Finals as a group. The Zone Finals are set for April 2 in Savannah, Georgia. The Cougars will be seeking their first Zone 5 Championship since 2010 and their 28th all-time IHSA National Championship Horse Show appearance.
