Strong Second Half Lifts No.18 Cougars to 20th Win of the Season

Box Score WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -  A strong second half propelled the No.18 College of Charleston men's basketball team to their 20th win of the season at Monmouth University on Thursday night. The Cougars, now 20-1 on the season, have won 19 straight and hold the country's longest winning streak. They are also the first team in the country to secure 20 wins.

Charleston started the game with two triples from Ante Brzovic and Reyne Smith and a slam dunk from Babacar Faye. The Cougars went scoreless for four minutes following the early spurt and were down by as much as nine throughout the first half.

Dalton Bolon went on a 7-0 run of his own to bring the Cougars within one and eventually enter the half down 31-28. The Hawks outrebounded the Cougars 22-21 in the frame as Charleston shot 28%.

Smith gave the Cougars their first lead since 3-2 at the start of the contest six minutes into the second half on a three to make it 41-39. The Australian extended the lead to 45-39 on another triple to push a 20-8 post-halftime run for Charleston.

The Cougars held Monmouth scoreless for just over three minutes to build a ten-point advantage and hold on for the 69-55 victory.

Key Cougars
  • Smith had a game-high 27 points going 7-for-10 from behind the arc. It is his fourth 20-point game this season.
  • Bolon contributed 15 points followed by Pat Robinson III with eight.
  • Six different Cougars grabbed at least four rebounds, led by Brzovic with six and Bolon, Ryan Larson and Jaylon Scott with five. Larson also dished out five assists.
Game Notes
  • The contest was just the third time this season the Cougars have been down at the half (Kent State, Elon).
  • The Cougars scored 17 second chance points to match 17 bench points. Charleston ranks tenth in the nation in bench points per game.
  • Charleston outrebounded Monmouth 41-38 and sank 12 three-pointers, their fourth straight game with double-digit triples.
