Equestrian Set for NCEA Debut

COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the first time in program history, the College of Charleston Equestrian Team will compete in a National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) meet.
On Friday, November 3rd, the Cougars will travel to the University of South Carolina for their first NCEA competition. The Cougars gave an impressive performance at their first IHSA competition of the season, winning champion high point team at the opening IHSA Regional competition in Aiken, S.C. Kathryn McCarthy won overall Reserve High Point Rider on Saturday, Abby Barnes won overall High Point Rider on Sunday, and Lainie Rubin was the Reserve High Point Rider. Additionally, Lily Borders qualified for regionals.
The Cougars announced their joining of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association this September and "are thrilled to be adding the NCEA format to our existing IHSA schedule, all with efforts and intentions to create additional competitive experiences for all of our student athletes at the College of Charleston," said head coach Natasha V. McCarthy.
The National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) was founded in 1998 and has over 900 members, made up of 27 Division 1 to Division 3 schools. The mission of the NCEA is to provide collegiate opportunities for female equestrian student-athletes to compete at the highest level while embracing equity, diversity, and promoting academic and competitive excellence. NCEA competitions are made up of four sections: Jumping Seat Flat and Fences, Western Horsemanship, and Reining, with each school having just five riders compete.
The are some key differences between NCEA and IHSA competitions. Riders in both competitions draw a random horse, however riders go head-to-head both competing on the same draw in NCEA. IHSA gives no warm-up and designated tests, while NCEA provides warm-ups and patterns before the show. Additionally, riders all have similar skill levels and abilities within their flat work and fence height.

Flat (4): Sydney Callagy, Hailey Pendl, Caroline Berg, Cate Hernandez
Fences (4): Hailey Pendl, Olivia Lonneman, Sydney Callagy, Lily Toensing
