MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Malaka Belser drove in five runs, highlighted by a walk-off homer in the fifth, to give College of Charleston a series win over Delaware with a 9-0 victory on Sunday at Patriots Point.
The Cougars took two of three from the defending CAA regular season champions in the opening conference series of the season. Caroline Conner limited the Blue Hens to just three hits and two unearned runs over 12 innings in the two Charleston victories.
Belser drove in her first two runs in a six-run Cougar first inning, lining a shot off the fence in center for a long single. Mary-Kathryn Scott added an RBI on a sacrifice bunt, and Charleston took advantage of wildness by two Delaware pitchers to score its other three runs.
Conner continued her outstanding work in the circle, allowing only a bunt single with one out in the first in picking up her fourth win of the season. She walked batters in the second and fourth but no hits over the final four innings to wrap up her fourth complete game and second shutout.
It stayed a 6-0 game until the fifth when the Cougars put two on and Belser followed with a three-run homer that tucked inside the left field foul pole. The five RBI were the most by a Cougar since three different players did so during the 2019 season.
Charleston concludes a stretch of 22 consecutive home games on Wednesday when Ohio State visits Patriots Point for a 2 p.m. contest. The Cougars resume CAA play next weekend at Towson.
Quoting Tracey Lynch
"It was big for us to start out with a series win. Delaware is a great team, and we knew it needed a team approach to attack them with our best. We pitched well, played solid defense and had a great approach in the box. I am proud of the work this team is putting in to reach new heights this season."
