SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – College of Charleston sailing assistant coach Conner Blouin won the 2023 Sunfish North American U.S. Singlehanded Championship finishing 20 points ahead of the rest of the field, taking home the George D. O'Day trophy.
"It's really exciting to win my first US Singlehanded Championship and third Sunfish North American Championship just ahead of the US Pan American Trials in July," said Blouin. "Getting to do this as a coach and representing College of Charleston is such a unique experience. I spend a lot of time watching other athletes work on their craft."
Blouin added "Getting to coach a certain style of sailing and seeing that success in their growth and development gives me confidence in what I am doing, and how I approach the game."
Blouin crossed the finish line first in four of the seven races posting just 10 points for the dominant win and placed no lower than fifth in any race.
"This was a big step for Conner in his campaign to represent the US at the 2024 Pan Am Games in Chile," said head coach Ward Cromwell of Blouin's accomplishment.
The 2023 installment was the 60th North American Championship regatta.
With the win, Blouin will have the chance to represent the United States at the Sunfish Pan Am trials July 7-9 at the Sayville Yacht Club in Blue Point, Ny. off the coast of Long Island.
In the Pan Am qualifier, Blouin will compete against 14 others USSCA members for the single U.S. men's berth in the 2023 games – those scheduled for October 25 through November 5 in Santiago, Chile. Should Blouin get the nod as U.S. representative, he will compete against seven other sailors from around the world.
