Cougars Drop Diamond Head Classic Opener

HONOLULU, HI – The College of Charleston men's basketball team fell to the Oregon State Beavers 74-65 in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic on Sunday in Hawaii.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • AJ Smith scored the first basket of the game on a driving lay-up before the teams traded points through the opening four minutes, with neither maintaining the lead for more than a minute.
  • Oregon State used a 12-1 run to take their largest lead at 22-12 with 10 minutes to play. Despite going 2-13 from the field during the frame, a Lazar Djokovic post lay-in, two Jaxon Prunty free throws, and aggressive defense in the final minutes of the first half helped pull the Cougars back within nine at 36-25 entering the locker room. Djokovic led the Cougars with eight in the half.
  • Charleston held Oregon State to 3-10 from the field to open the second half before a two minutes scoring drought on both ends of the court. Charleston worked their way back, coming with seven points at 48-41 on a Deywilk Tavarez drive with 11 minutes to play.
  • Oregon State regained a 12 point edge at 55-43 before an 8-0 Cougar run capped by a CJ Fulton three made it a four point game at 55-51 with six minutes to play.
  • After cutting the lead, the Cougars went 4-11 from the field to close the game.
KEY COUGARS
  • Djokovic and Derrin Boyd led the Cougars with 13 points each. Djokovic grabbed eight rebounds followed by Boyd with five.
  • Tavarez was the third Cougar in double figures with ten points.
  • Fulton dished out a game-high four assists.
GAME NOTES
  • Charleston's bench outscored Oregon State's 19-14. The Beavers shot 47% from the field compared to the Cougars' 36%.
  • The Cougars went 17-25 from the charity stripe and 6-24 from three point range.
  • Charleston recorded at least eight steals for the seventh time this season.

  • Charleston, now 8-3, will play the loser of Loyola Chicago at 5:30 p.m. est. The contest will air on ESPNU.
