Elon, N.C. - The conclusion of the 2024 CAA Championships marks the end of the outdoor track and field season for the College of Charleston, and the weekend was highlighted by a conference champion, stellar freshmen performances and a multitude of reconfigurations to the Cougar record book.
On day one, Luzy Lieger, who was coming off three straight championships in pole vault, was eyeing for her last one as a Cougar. After six hours of competition-related delays, the graduate student from Germany took the crown with ease, jumping 3.90m (12' 9.5"). Leiger's season may not be over as spots in the NCAA Track & Field Regionals in Lexington, Ky., have yet to be announced.
Also in the pole vault, Madison Jent finished with a bronze medal, placing her on the podium with a jump of 3.80m (12' 5.6"). Jent was the number one freshman in the event and was the highest finisher of a non-graduating student.
A record-breaking season continued for Kaitlynn Bailey on Friday when she clinched a spot in the 100 final (11.70), not only resetting the school record again but also becoming the first Charleston athlete to make the final in the event in the program's CAA history.
The trend of outstanding freshman performances continued with Savannah Stoutt in the 3k Steeplechase. Stoutt came in ranked sixth in school history and finished the day sixth in the CAA and third all-time in the Charleston record book with a time of 10:44.60. Along with Jent, Stoutt also was the number one freshman in the conference for her respective event.
Day two started off with Kinsley Allen scoring in the high jump with a height of 1.67m (5' 5.5"), good enough to place sixth and finish as the highest jumping freshman in the meet. Allen moved to third all-time for the Cougars, capping off a phenomenal run from all three freshmen over the two days.
In horizontal jumps, Abby Fush led the way in triple jump, finishing second in her flight with a distance of 11.90m (39' 0.5"), moving her up to fourth on the Charleston record list and less than an inch from third. Another jumper, Avery Jackson, finished her Charleston career with a personal record in long jump, leaping 5.32m (17' 5.25").
On the track, the day was highlighted by Rhian Purves. The British native qualified for the 1500 final the day before then followed it up scoring in seventh place (4:35.11). The graduate student leaves a lasting impression at the College where she led the distance program for the better part of five years.
The final event of the weekend for the Cougars was the 5k, where over 30 competitors battled it out. Cayden Crismon, who doubled with the 10k the day prior, ran for a personal record (17:20.64) which helped her place 12th in the event.
The track & field team will now look towards a long offseason until next winter for the indoor season. This season saw four new record holders, an improved conference score total and a foundation set by the underclassmen that the Cougars will look to carry them to further success.
