CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charlotte native AJ Smith has signed with the College of Charleston men's basketball team head coach Chris Mack announced Friday.
Smith joins the Cougars from crosstown rival The Citadel. The guard started 29 games and averaged a team-high 16.2 points per game to go with 4.3 rebounds per game. Smith will have two years of eligibility remaining
.
"We are excited to add AJ Smith into the Cougar family. AJ is an absolute warrior on the basketball court and brings a winning mentality to everything he does. He's a powerfully built wing that excels in guarding multiple positions, finishing on the break, and presenting mismatch opportunities," said Mack.
When the Bulldogs visited TD Arena a season ago, Smith dropped 18 points going 6-9 from the field. He scored in double figures in all but one game during his sophomore season, ranking sixth in the SoCon in points per game.
"AJ has worked hard at improving his shooting over the past year and it was reflective in his three-point percentage as a sophomore. Basketball skills aside, AJ is a tremendous person and will be a leader on and off the floor."
