PARIS, FRANCE – College of Charleston alumnus Juan I. Maegli '13 (Guatemala), Enrique (Quique) Arathoon '17 (El Salvador) and Stefano Peschiera '18 (Peru) and assistant coach Ian Barrows (United States) concluded the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics in strong fashion. Peschiera and Barrows both took home bronze in the men's dinghy and men's skiff events, respectively. All three alums finished top 20 in the ILCA 7 event.
Barrows, who competed in his first Olympic games, was the first to medal in the group. Barrows, alongside partner Hans Henken, whose sister, Paris, sailed at Charleston and became the first female Olympian in school history, recorded ten top 10 finishes across the 12 preliminary races and jumped from 12th place to 6th overall from the first to second day of racing. Third and second places finishes in the ninth and tenth races, respectively, propelled the team to 4th overall heading into the medal race.
Barrows and Henken used an eighth-place finish in the medal race, which bested Team Ireland's 18th place regatta, to jump into third place overall and secure bronze.
Peschiera took home bronze in the men's dinghy event, capturing his first Olympic medal with a ninth-place finish in the medal race, narrowly securing 3rd from Hungary and Norway. He earned Peru's first medal since Barcelona 1992 and the country's first in a sailing event. Peschiera also became the first CofC sailor to medal in the Olympics since Johnny Lovell took silver in the Greece 2004 with Team USA.
Peschiera finished top 15 in seven of the eight preliminary races, including a first-place finish in the second race and fourth place in the eighth race. Despite finishing in ninth in the medal race, Peschiera's total net points from racing (80) were lower than Hungary (84) and Norway (85).
His third Olympic games, Peschiera finished 31st in Rio 2016, becoming the first person to represent Peru at the Olympic Games in sailing and 25th in Tokyo 2020. The 2018 College Sailor of the Year secured gold in the ILCA 7 class at the 2023 Pan American Games, qualifying him for the 2024 Olympics.
Maegli concluded his fifth and final Olympics in 16th, highlighted by a regatta-best 3rd overall finish in the fourth race. Maegli bested his 19th place finish in Tokyo 2020. Arathoon rounded out the trio in 20th place, posting 4th overall in the opening race of the 2024 Olympics in the men's dinghy event. Arathoon's 20th place topped his previous best of 23rd in Tokyo.
