Offshore Sailing wins the Shields Trophy Sept. 13-15, 2024 in Annapolis, Md.

Offshore Wins Shields Trophy in Dominant Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston's offshore sailing team won the Shields Trophy in Annapolis, Md., while the dinghy squad captured four first-place finishes of their own in a busy weekend of sailing.
 
CofC was the most consistent team throughout the Shields Trophy regatta, taking first with 17 total points. 
 
Charleston also had a pair of regattas in the Holy City, as the squad cruised to a first-place victory in the SAISA North Top 6 Invite. Scores of 37 in the A division, 46 in B and 37 in C for 120 total points was 133 points ahead of second-place Clemson.
 
CofC took first and second place in the Ashley River Trophy, hosted by The Citadel. The Cougars had scores of 6 in both the A and B division for first (12 total points) and 9 and 11 in its second-place boats (20 total points). The Citadel finished in third place with 50 total points.
 
Charleston rounded out the weekend with two individual first-place finishes in the SAISA Open Singlehanded Championship and SAISA Women's Singlehanded Championship. In the SAISA Open regatta, Freshman Will Rucker claimed the top spot with 34 total points. Eliott Raison (52), Benjamin Dufour (55) and Ethan Homberger (67) finished third, fourth and eighth, respectively. First year Isabella Mendoza Cabezas took first in the SAISA Women's Champs with 21 points, 16 points ahead of second. Emma Tallman (47), Fredrikke Foss (51) and Brooke Bogdan (51) finished the race fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.
 
The Cougars return to the water this weekend for four regattas. Charleston competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta Sept. 20-22, Sugar Bowl and Women's Sugar Bowl Sept. 21-22 and host the SAISA Match Race Championships Sept. 21-22.
